Expert Article: Masters in Theater Ecucation Degree

Why did you decide to pursue a M.Ed. degree?

I knew from my undergraduate experience that I wanted to continue on to a graduate degree. There were so many more questions I wanted answered. Pursuing a Masters of Education degree has allowed me to refine my knowledge and expertise as both a student and an educator. New York University’s Steinhardt School has taught me how to connect theory to applied learning experiences, an opportunity only a Master’s education could achieve.

What is your primary area of interest within the field of education?

My primary area of interest within the field of education is Educational Theatre. I am specifically interested in the aspects of Educational Theatre and how it corresponds to applied learning with Special Education.

Please describe the M.Ed. program you chose to attend

New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development Master’s of Educational Theatre program is a certification program in which students explore ideas and concepts using drama strategies and theatre forms in the classroom, for the classroom and on stage. Graduates are teachers of drama and theatre at preschools, elementary, middle and secondary schools. They hold positions in education departments in regional theatres, museums and art galleries. They are directors of drama and theatre for community centers, camp and recreation programs and religious organizations. There are also tracks of the degree that allow dual certifications of English or Social Studies as well as non-certificate programs. NYU’s M. Ed. Program allows the opportunity to study and research in an amazing university as well as the many neighborhoods of New York City. NYU also newly has a school in Abu Dhabi and many international abroad programs to offer. US News and World Report rank NYU’s Steinhardt School #16 among Master Education programs.

Why did you choose the school you attended?

New York University’s Educational Theatre program was the first of its kind and very few schools offer a Master’s in Educational Theatre within their programs. NYU’s Steinhardt School offers integrated course offerings in drama, dramatic literature and theatre, which are all tied to the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts. These courses allow students to feel equally as educated as artists as well as professionally certified as teachers of theatre, all grades. Due to NYU’s size and the many different class offerings, I am able to study outside of my major as well. Even though my graduate study is in Educational Theatre, I am still able to take additional classes from the other NYU educational departments in areas of interest that I feel correspond to my graduate degree as well. As cliché as it may sound, the possibilities are truly endless.

What did you like about the program?

NYU’s Graduate Educational programs put you in the classroom from day one. You are immediately immersed within the New York Public Schools and feel quite accomplished fairly early on in your graduate career. The program prides itself in enabling the graduate students to learn both from theory and applied learning. Teachers and students continuously give mock lesson plans and classes to build students’ portfolios of lessons and activities to draw from. My experience thus far at NYU’s Steinhardt School has been more than what I expected. Upon graduating, I know I will feel entirely prepared and ready to enter the work force, unlike the feeling I had when graduating college.

What did you not like about the program?

Some of your classes may have a few undergraduates in it that have weaseled their way into taking advanced courses in preparation to continue on to their Master’s degree. There is also little interaction between the many different schools at NYU, although the school is aware and is working very hard to incorporate cross-interaction among its schools.

Were you employed while taking classes? If so, how did you manage your time?

I am able to work part-time while taking classes although many work full-time. The second year of the Educational degree is a little difficult to hold a full-time job due to the amount of student teaching hours required in your second and final year of the degree.

How did you pay for your graduate degree?

New York University awarded me a scholarship. The remaining amount was taken in government Stafford loans.

Did you participate in any research or special projects while in school?

I am currently researching and studying the correlations between educational theatre and how it can affect children with autism.

What should a student look for when choosing an education program?

When choosing an education program, students should look for an environment and a community that they are prepared to be with for a designated amount of time and research the many different classes within the program. Determine what each the educational program can offer you—what will make your experience at their school different from the others. What are their career services like for Graduate students? How will they help you find a job by the time you graduate?

What do you intend to do with your degree?

I intend to open my own non-profit theatre company for children with Autism. There is a huge gap between studies and therapy for children with Autism and theatre, and New York City is the best place to start. I plan to also teach Educational Theatre for both private and public institutions along the way.

Did you make use of your school’s career services office during your job search?

I set-up a schedule to meet with career services early on in my graduate career and will continue to do so throughout the duration of my time at NYU. The NYU community is vast in New York City and reaches out to fellow alumni when looking for employment.
